Avi Lewis’s 12 Tips for a High-Tech Job Search in 2025

Avi Lewis won’t say this about himself, so we’ll say it for him. He’s great. A software engineer at Meta (Data Infra for AI) based in Tel Aviv, he helps countless friends in our high-tech scene land jobs, shares companies that are hiring, and runs Goozali - the job board for the Israeli high-tech market.

First things first: if you’re not following Avi on LinkedIn yet, start. His content is pure gold.

The job market changed. Fast. If you’re still sending resumes and waiting for a call - you might be living in 2015.

So how do you actually find a job today? Here are Avi Lewis’s 12 tips - no sugarcoating, no clichés, just what actually works.

1. Stop playing the lottery

Applying through LinkedIn isn’t a job search - it’s a bet. Most people get hired through connections, referrals, or direct outreach. Skip the line. Go straight to the source.

2. Resumes are passé

A résumé is just a starting point, not the whole story. Today it’s about proof: projects on GitHub, articles, videos, extensions you built. Show what you can do - not just what you studied.

3. Be specific

“I know everything” doesn’t work. “I’m a DevOps specializt focused on Cloud” does. Your niche is your edge.

4. Your portfolio is your personality

A résumé says, “I exist.” A portfolio says, “You want me before someone else grabs me.” Don’t stop at words - show what you’ve built.

5. Google is the new résumé

When a recruiter Googles you, what do they find? If it’s nothing, that’s a problem. Articles, workshops, videos - even posts - that’s your first impression.

6. Actions > words

“I learn fast, love challenges, self-taught” - great, so is everyone else. Built something cool? Wrote something deep? Let your work do the talking.

7. Pick a niche and go deep

  • AI + Finance
  • TypeScript + Accessibility
  • Drones + Reverse Engineering

Invest in three to four disciplines - and become incomparable.

8. Stop asking “Hiring?”

Instead of asking, offer value. Build a deck, a prototype, a review of the company’s product. Show how you’d solve a problem - and stop looking like just another candidate.

9. Cold messages aren’t dead

Most candidates are afraid to send them - so you should. Short, sharp, personal:

  1. What you noticed
  2. What you did about it
  3. What you want
  4. Why them

Four sentences max. No more.

10. Follow-up isn’t shameful

Got ghosted? Don’t quit. A friend of mine tried to reach a young startup’s CEO four times. On the fifth try, he got a job offer.

11. Know where to look

A quick skim of Crunchbase or Calcalist - and you’ll spot who just raised a Series A. Those startups are thirsty for talent. Tailor your outreach to their pain - that changes everything.

12. Real networking

Networking isn’t the number of LinkedIn connections. It’s people who’ll vouch for you when they hear about an opening. Build relationships, not shopping lists.

An effective job search in 2025 isn’t about volume - it’s about the quality of your presence. Follow these tips and you’ll stand out exactly where recruiters are looking.
